About This Event

Build LinkedIn Profiles is a hands-on, cohort-based session. In a breakout room you work with a small group of young job-seekers, looking at their profiles together and helping each one make it clearer and more credible. It is a working session, not a presentation.

Impact: Each participant leaves with a clearer, stronger LinkedIn profile and a short list of changes they have already made.

Outcome:

  • Volunteers spend 45 minutes in a breakout room with a small cohort of young job-seekers, helping each one improve their LinkedIn profile.
  • Participants publish an improved LinkedIn profile: photo, headline, summary and experience.

What volunteering here involves

Your role

You are a reviewer and coach for a small group. You look at real profiles, say what a recruiter would notice, and help each person rewrite their own words, without writing the profile for them.

Time commitment: 60 minutes, live. Preparation beforehand: the checklist and guide sent to you.

What you'll be doing

  1. 1Before the session, read the profile checklist and the short guide sent to you.
  2. 2Join the welcome (5 minutes) and a three-minute orientation. There is no icebreaker.
  3. 3Spend 45 minutes with a small cohort in your breakout room. Take each person's profile in turn: photo, headline, summary, experience and skills.
  4. 4Ask questions that bring out what each person has actually done, then help them put it in their own words.
  5. 5Keep every participant involved: invite quieter people to share their screen, and keep feedback specific and kind.
  6. 6Stay for attendance and brief feedback, and say if anyone needs further support.

How the session runs

  1. 0-5 minWelcome and introductionWhat a good profile does and what each participant will leave with. No icebreaker.
  2. 5-8 minVolunteer orientationThree minutes at most: the checklist you will use and how the breakout rooms work.
  3. 8-53 minProfile review in breakout roomsThe core of the session: 45 minutes with your cohort, going through each profile section by section.
  4. 53-58 minFeedback and attendanceAttendance, brief feedback, and a note of anyone who needs follow-up.
  5. 58-60 minThank you and closing

What to expect

  • Cohort-based: you join a breakout room with a small group, set up before the session. There are no one-on-one pairings.
  • Participants edit their own profiles live; you guide, they write.
  • Most people leave having changed at least their headline and summary.
  • The organising team is available throughout for technical, joining and breakout-room support.
  • Join from a quiet place with your camera on, and log in five minutes early to test your audio.
  • Young people may take part, so the safeguarding rules apply: stay in the breakout room the organising team sets up; do not take your own screenshots or recordings; do not share or ask for personal contact details; and flag anything that worries you to the organising team.

What you'll need

  • A laptop with camera, microphone and a stable connection
  • Your own LinkedIn profile open, so you can point to real examples
  • The profile checklist read beforehand: all preparation happens before the session
  • Two or three examples ready of what makes a headline or summary stand out

What To be announced provides

  • The participants, grouped into breakout rooms in advance
  • A profile checklist and a short guide, sent before the session
  • Guidance on running a supportive, practical review
  • Technical, joining and breakout-room support during the session

How it runs

  1. Before the session: receive the checklist and guide, and read them
  2. During the session: welcome, 3-minute orientation, profile review in breakout rooms, feedback and attendance, closing
  3. Core principle: prepare beforehand, work on real profiles during the session
